Once you're done building a silo, you can use it to store hay to ensure you have enough food for your animals. After purchasing it, it will take 2 days to build (this starts the day after the purchase). You'll be taken to a screen showing your farm and you'll be able to select where to place the silo. If you do that close to your existing barn or coop then worst-case scenario you at least have a paddock of fresh fodder for your animals, keeping them fed through until winter. either way, if you've got some space it can't hurt to let a bunch of grass grow and then try harvesting it on a lucky day. That could just be because the dense grass patches are hard to "count", so there's probably more grass in a small dense patch than a large sparse patch. I don't know if luck is a factor in how likely you are to get hay although I have noticed that cutting more grass at once seems to yeild more than cutting sparse tufts. I honestly don't think this is a likely solution I only suggest it because it's free and easy to try If you've already upgraded the scythe though, then I would think that would also refresh it and so it's probably not a problem with the scythe.
